Paper Project

I'm really excited about my paper project. We have to create a medium for GHsmith papers to be advertised by making an image only using paper.(It's only a fictitious brief) We had to base it around a noble prize winner from the year of our Birth. Mine was the 14th Dalai Lama who won the Noble Peace Prize on 10th December 1989. The following are my illustrations and their written concepts, all were done using a scapel and various types of paper, no glue has been used.

The above photograph shows the word Wisdom surrounded by what is supposed to represent the sea as the 14th Dalai lama is known by his people as the ocean of wisdom.

This one shows a dragon with mountains in front of it, and this comes from the idea of Tibetan representations of time, each year is assigned an element and an animal, there are two consecutive years of an element, the first male and the second female. I chose to look at the date that he won the Nobel Peace Prize and it turned out to be; female-earth-dragon. So that's what this is =)

This is a development of the above, a much more refined image, this is the view from an above angle as a horizontal photograph wasn't really working as the lighting was too bad to distinguish the dragon from the plants. I chose to represent the idea of earth with Flowers instead of mountains because I thought I could create a more 'peaceful' image and also to further the idea of the year being female.
This is a version of the dragon using coloured paper, once again I have slightly adjusted the image. I really like the combination of colours and how clearly you can see each layer. This is my favourite so far, along my tutors said that they don't really like it and prefer the white one, so I have some things to consider.

So that is my work on the paper project so far, well the main pieces anyway, I haven't included any experimentation pieces yet, I might do at a later date.

  1. I really, really like these. the use of light and shadow, especially on the dragon+flowers is especially good. I like how your lines flow.
