What is Illustration?

First page from my sketchbook (Summer project). Drawing+Monochrome.
The writing from top to bottom says:

An Impression
- Questions how much detail is needed to get across a concept or idea.
An Observation- Illustration can be an observation of the world around us.
A style- A stylised observation shows an illustrators mark on a topic. This image is less realistic and allows for creative licensing.
A Symbol/Motif- Lone wolf howling at the moon. Symbols in illustration are used to convey a message.
